Scott Roeder convicted of murdering Dr. George Tiller

Roeder’s defense that Dr. Tiller needed to be killed didn’t fly in the courtroom. I hope he enjoys his time in prison.

WICHITA, Kan. — A man who said he killed prominent Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller in order to save the lives of unborn children was convicted Friday of murder.

The jury deliberated for just 37 minutes before finding Scott Roeder, 51, of Kansas City, Mo., guilty of premeditated, first-degree murder in the May 31 shooting death.

He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years when he is sentenced March 9. Prosecutor Nola Foulston said she would pursue a so-called “Hard 50″ sentence, which would require Roeder to serve at least 50 years before he can be considered for parole.

UPDATE: Suspect in George Tiller killing in custody

Some of the information below is speculative and may change. CNN just announced there is upcoming news on the suspect.

In an update, the Wichita police are saying the suspect is in custody but are not releasing the name of the suspect. They have said he is 51 years old and the license plate number on a light blue Ford Taurus led to the arrest. In the article below, the owner of the Taurus sounds to be one Scott Roeder. There is a Scott Roeder who is a member of Operation Rescue and one of his posts at Operation Rescue appears below. Information now is that the suspect is Scott P. Roeder but the police department has not confirmed.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. at Reformation Lutheran Church, located at 7601 E. 13th St., where he is a member of the congregation.

Tiller’s attorney, Dan Monnat, confirmed that Tiller was the victim.

Police spokesman Gordon Bassham said witnesses provided a license number of the car the killer used to speed away from the church.

Officers said they had been looking for a white male who was driving a 1993 powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area.

Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Scott Roeder on I-35 between the two main Gardner exits around 1:30 p.m. He surrendered without incident. Deputies did not find any weapons on him.

“We shut down I-35 and directed him to come back to us. He complied with our request. He was arrested and taken into custody,” Lt. Mike Phannestiel said.
