To hell with the good old days
I just got my power back a few minutes ago after being without it for 15 hours. We are on a well so when we lose electricity we also lose water and after about a foot of snow the electric lines evidently couldn’t handle the weight.
I have come to the conclusion that I wouldn’t have made a very good pioneer. I like hot water on tap and flush toilets. I like microwaves ovens, coffee makers, television sets and computers. I like being able to turn on my lamp and read when I can’t sleep. I like hair dryers and flat irons.
Here’s the weird party of this little story. This afternoon about 2:00 my husband decided he had enough and was ready to go to a motel. I got a few things packed, my laptop in it’s case and we packed up his little truck to head out. We pulled out into the driveway and he went back into the house to lock the garage doors from the inside.
After a minute or two he showed up at the truck grinning and said “guess what.” Guess what….the electricity came on in the two minutes we were out of the house.
I just had my cup of coffee and a shower…..nothing makes me feel grubbier than not being able to wash my hands.
So, here is to technology!!!! I love it.
Now, it’s time for a nap. Everyone stay safe and stay warm.

HI Sage … with all the reports on television about the snow storms in the North, I was wondering how things were going for you.
Good to hear the electricity came back just as you were heading out. Good to hear the comforts of home have been restored. (Spending hours, sometimes days without electricity after a hurricane is truly horrible, but spending hours without electricity due to a snow storm would be (for me) something that I am not sure I could cope with.)Stay well and stay warm.

We have both kerosene heaters going and are using a butane stove for hot water, laptop on a battery using the cellular phone for internet and playing monopoly by candlelight. Maybe this is what normal will be when the global warming/cap and trade crowd finally get’s their way?

Thanks. Fortunately we have propane logs in the fireplace and a propane stove in the den downstairs so we didn’t have to worry about getting cold.

Somewhere between 10 and 12 inches. What made it worse is it would snow and then sleet, snow and then sleet. That went on all night.

So glad you made it through ! A nightmare if you had headed for the motel and got stuck on the road

Sounds like fun. I am an old hand at power outages in snow. Melt snow for flushing and bathing. Boil and run through a coffe filter for drinking. Go to bed when it gets dark.

I know one thing, the next time the lights flash a couple of times and I feel an outage is coming, I’m filling up the bathtub with water. I can’t stand not being able to wash my hands. It’s just too much having my husband lifting 5 gallon containers of water.
We keep drinking water in gallon jugs on hand at all times and fortunately my husband had bought a bag of ice since the icemaker wouldn’t be working. We both drink a lot of water.
