Woke up to a press conference with Obama and the Prime minister of Japan. The Prime minister was talking about what Japan has agreed to do to assist in Afghanistan. That would be no troops but money and support on the cicilian side.
So this trip is to see what assistance he can get from these countries in Afghanistan before he makes his decision.

I used to fly student standby during that war. Usually over the nitghtime hours. I saw one soldier stuffing his uniform in the garbage and sat and talked woth several others. Horrible homecoming for to many. Vietnam vets have told me since that they were warned about inhospital treatment when coming back. Especially in NY and SF.

I can’t imagine greeting troops every day. I vividly remember the day my brother came home from Vietnam…..it was quite an emotional scene. 4 sisters, his mom and dad were all crying and we looked around and most everyone around was crying with us. The two years he was gone were probably the two longest years of all of our lives. The stress on the families is immense and I would hope that Obama will look at every possible option before committing more troops.

PBS had a great documentary on Last night about the Greeters at the airport in Bangor Maine where most of the troops leave and arrive from. They are mostly elderly old people Vets and not, are there greeting everyplane load of troops that comes or goes outof there. Despite their own ailments and infirmities thay are there around the clock. They have greeted over 900,000 troops.
They spoke with the director on the radio yesterday and some of those troops called in and talked about what it meant to them to be greeted like that and have cell phones ready to call their family. Not to mention cookies and beverages. Watching their faces and hearing their comments, I agree. It is no light decision. There is consideration for those that do survive and come back physically whole. They are emotionally brittle. This too is what Obama has to consider. Also the Greeters are profoundly affected in their views. One woman got so she could not send them off. She just can’t handle it.
