How NOT to teach gun safety
First rule of gun safety is NEVER, EVER, point a gun at anyone or anything you don’t intend to shoot. I don’t care if you’ve unloaded the gun and have ten safety mechanisms engaged, you DON’T point a gun at your head unless you intend to kill yourself.
What the HELL was he thinking?
My sincere sympathies to his family and friends.
IMPERIAL, Mo. | An eastern Missouri man is dead after accidentally shooting himself while teaching firearms safety to his girlfriend.
KSDK-TV reports that 40-year-old James Looney of Imperial died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The shooting happened Friday. Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer told the station that according to witnesses, Looney was demonstrating how to use the different safety mechanisms on several guns. Witnesses told authorities that Looney would put the guns to his head, ask his girlfriend if she thought the gun would go off, then pull the trigger.
The safety mechanisms worked for the first two guns. But the third gun fired. Looney died Saturday at a hospital.

I hate to say this. Some things never change. Back in 1959, in Cuba, shortly after the “triumph” of Fidel Castro’s revolution, one of the young men who had followed him to the mountains while they were fighting the Batista government from the mountains and who had come down from the mountain, also, while visiting his girlfriend, a distant relative who lived one block away from our house, pointed a gun to his head, he was, they say, playing, “russian roulette” and severely injured himself. He did not die, but he was not the same man after his injury. She married him regardless of the mental disability with which the injury left him.

I just don’t get it. Unless a person wants to die they should never, ever point a gun at their head.

It is simply foolish to play with a gun like that. Too many people I have heard of were either killed or injured with a gun they thought was unloaded. The first thing anyone does when handed a firearm is to check to see if it is loaded.

Actually, your first rule is really the second rule:
1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
