In a press conference Gov. Sanford, after much rambling around, admitted that he was not out hiking the Appalachian Trail during his disappearance, he was in fact in Argentina engaged in an affair.

Sanford, who was thought of as a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012, tendered his resignation as Chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

Sanford went on to say that he and his wife were going to try to “work through things” and had been for the last 5 months.  He laid part of the blame for his affair on the bubble of politics.  The affair is with a friend and he described it as starting out as an innocent and friendly friendship that spans a period of 8 years.  The affair started about a year ago and was discovered by his wife about 5 months ago.

The first lady of South Carolina was NOT by the governor’s side during the press conference a departure from the typical political wifely thing.

The admission was complete with tears and apologies.

Sanford was the second Republican in 8 days to admit to an affair, John Ensign having admitted to his affair on June 16.
