US Airways Jet Ditches in Hudson, All Safe
As I listen to some of the passengers talking about their experience I realize how amazing it is that everyone escaped alive. The pilot, co-pilot and flight attendants are credited for getting everyone out safely. Once escaping the plane the Coast Guard, private ferries and private citizens assisted in getting everyone to safety from the life boats. There is one report of a fractured leg and a number of cases of hypothermia. A complete report of injuries is not available yet.

US Airways Jet Ditches in Hudson; All Reported Safe
By KEN BELSON 5 minutes ago
Updated, 5:16 p.m. | A US Airways plane that took off Thursday at 3:26 p.m. from La Guardia Airport landed in the Hudson River five minutes later, where it remains nearly submerged. Ferries and other boats converged to help with a rescue effort, as the plane drifted south in the water. Initial reports from police and people at the scene are that everyone on the plane escaped. The plane, US Airways flight 1549, took off from LaGuardia Airport at 3:26 p.m. was bound for Charlotte, N.C., and had 148 passengers and 5 crew members. The plane headed north and rose to 3,200 feet before banking west towards the Hudson River. The plane then started descending rapidly as it headed south down the Hudson River. The pilot tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the river.
A bird or several birds entered engines on both sides of the plane, or a “double bird” in the jargon of safety workers. It is not clear where the plane hit the birds. SOURCE

it was 27 yrs and one day ago that that plane crashed into the potomoc river. All but 5 died. That is why this is so amazing to me. Help was there so fast!

Amazing story!

Yes, this was truly amazing.

Been watching the story all afternoon. (I’m a crisis junkie.) My daughter and grandsons live 1 block off the Hudson in Manhattan, so I could picture it all. What an amazing landing, and how good to hear there was no panic, just action and reaction.
Wizcon, re the DC crash, my husband commuted over that bridge and had gone over it about a half hour before the accident, and in those days we had no cell phones. That one was really awful.

I remember the potomic one because it was the saddest day of my life. I was watching it on TV in a hospital waiting room when they came in and told me my preemie daughter had died. I actually had a flashback this afternoon. I thought I was watching the potomic crash and was wondering why.

Got my dates wrong 27 yrs and 2 days. It was a wednseday. I thought it was the 14th today!
Just watched a news cast from a local weatherman in minneapolis. He set some bannanas out last night peeled and unpeeled. He was hammering nails into a board with them this morning! Then he blew bubbles and they would freeze and shatter. Then my favorite, throw a glass of water and it freezes immediately…. mid air.
Fun in the northland! I get to go to a house with wood heat tonight. Finally gonna be warm for a bit!

Not often do we hear of such a miraculous occurrence as this. The right pilot at the right time in the right plane and he evidently set that plane down in the water like he did it every day.
I say give that pilot a raise!

Everytime I go in there, there is no one there! The last 2 nights I had appts. Both times we ended up sitting and talking. Rural areas suffer from 2 degrees of separation it seems. We all know someone in common around here (seems everybody is/was realted)

Hey, we can have a banning competition and see who press the button faster! Just like Press your luck, lol!

Wizcon, we probably need to set a time to chat today…so that we do not miss one another.
I made some more phonecalls to set up utilities for new place…I am almost there! We have decided to keep our dial-up service since economy is not that great. Me and my one horse dial up will be friends for a long time!

More foreclosure lately?
Wizcon Reply:
January 16th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Foreclosures are up 81% over all. But I don’t do much with them. Sometimes I go take pictures of them and any damage to them for the asset management co. Verify the water is shut off and things are winterized if empty. Also that the heat is on low. There are people that are contracted to muck them out. People often leave mad and do damage or leave a mess. last one I was in, they took all the light fixtures and bulbs.
I bought a foreclosure once and they punched holes in the walls. And left a mess. Fortuenately I knew how to patch walls. made a nice profit on it because it was mostly cleaning and new carpets and linoleum.

I believe it…people destroyed their own houses before being kicked out.
Today, I found out one more business is going out of business. In total, we have 8 businesses closing or folded this winter.

Good morning. Wizcon, it’s a shame what people will do to a home like that. When my deceased brother-in-law was younger he did that. He tore a house completely up when he moved out. I was shocked. He was the kind, though, that would complain in a restaurant about everything, run a waitress to death, and leave a Christian track as her tip. We left a few huge tips through the years when we’d go out to eat with them. We finally stopped. It was too embarrassing.
Grace, I miss the old gang too, but, most will be back and in an out. We’re going to get started with a lot of the serious moving tomorrow. My son’s will be here to help. My daughter’s over at our lake house cleaning it and getting it ready for us to move in to. They just got moved out of it this past weekend. We couldn’t move until they were out.
I’ve got to go pack for a while. I’ve got too much to do. I keep telling myself how wonderful it’s going to be to have a large office again. It’s my carrot I dangle from a stick. Talk to you later.

Wizcon, are you online now? Sage and I are in chat rightnow

Hiya Gang!
I haven’t posted in a while, but have come to read Sage’s articles. Sage, you’re doin’ good. I’ve come here for info on things like the plane crash, cause you seem to find the best articles.
Life’s been really, really busy. Am trying to get the last of the stuff packed from my mom’s house to move to my house. When I come home at night, I just collapse.
Hope all is well with everyone. Thanks for your post, Grace! I miss ya’ll too. Perhaps soon things will settle down. We made a good team here and wouldn’t want to see it go away.

Grace, shh, my husband is running around washing clothes, doing dishes, and getting the kitchen ready to pack. I just taped together a bunch of boxes and took a break. If you keep writing stuff like this, I’ll start feeling guilty for being on the computer.

January 16th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
LOL, girl…we need a break from time to time! My office is good to go!! Almost done with packing books and etc.
January 16th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
That’s what we’re working on now. I have a curio cabinet and a glass china type cabinet full of angels that have to go to storage. Until we get the new part of the house built, so much of my beautiful things are going to be stored. My formal dining room, everything. It’s almost going to be like just going to the lake house and leaving it all in Houston.
I can’t really get rid of much until I get the new part built because I’m not sure what we’ll need.
We’re building a 1400 ft addition that we hope to have completed by summer. It’s going to include a large family room, a sewing room, etc. I have a sewing room here that’s going to be completely packed away. I’m going to hate it. But it will be worth it when it’s finished. We’ll then have about 28,000 ft, nearly paid for.
We’ll have it paid off in about 18 months. Then all we’ll owe is our monthly maintenance and country club dues. We’re going to live in a resort community.
Well, I’d better get back to work. I really am starting to feel guilty. But that too shall pass. LOL

Sounds like You are going to be busy for a while, DrS. Moving during the winter and renovating in the spring/summer. Hey the end result sounds great! What kind of sewing do you do?
Once we move in, I will have to do some sewing–new curtains and etc. I think our landlady has some ugly bright orange thing hanging rightnow, lol!
January 16th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I make clothes for my grand babies. I’ve made my daughter and I a couple of matching dresses, but I’m not nearly as good on adult clothes as I am on the babies.
That’s probably because every time I make something new, it has to be a size bigger. LOL
I make the babies pjs and nightgowns, play clothes, and dress clothes. When my 7 yr old grand daughter and 5 yr old grand son were a little younger (a couple yrs ago.)I made them several matching outfits. I would make his with pants and hers with skirts. I put big buttons on the coveralls etc. They were really cute.
I haven’t done much sewing here, but I’m going to design my new sewing room and have lots of room for all my fabric and craft stuff.
It’s a lot of work, Grace, but it will be worth it in the end, won’t it. You’re so much more disciplined at it than me. You’ve been working on it for weeks. Me, I put it off till the last minute, then run around like a chicken with it’s head cut off, trying to get it all ready before the movers get her. LOL

You should have been my mother’s daughter. She’s a wonderful seamstress and I have no desire to sew at all.
January 16th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Wow, your sewing skill is very impressive, Doc! Must be cute to have matching clothing for siblings. I am not good at tayloring at all, pattern or no pattern.
Still have bed room and hubby’s studies to pack. Feel like donate the entire apartment away, lol!

I feel mentally tired today…will probably heading to bed very early. Heading to new town to get more things set up bright early morning. So, have a great weekend, my friends!
